WEEK ONE: Getting Started

PREVIEW: The focus of this week is setting goals for your work during this residency that reflects what you really would like to get accomplished. Your goals should be specific, measurable, and simple to state and understand. We have a few resources that will help you with that process.

4:00 CDT
MONDAY ZOOM: This is our first zoom to meet your fellow residents. It is always an exciting time!
  •  Lyn will share her screen to review the Member’s Area and Slack to make sure that you feel comfortable with your space for content and conversation. You will always have the option of coming to future zooms 15 minutes before the session to ask questions and to get clarification.
  •  Following the review, the time will be yours!  Be prepared to share a little something about yourself. Tell us where you live and what you do if you have a day job. Share something about your work and what you love to do in and out of the studio. You will have about 5 minutes each.

TO READ:
Setting Goals for the Artistic Mind - This short document outlines some of the reasons why goal setting might be difficult for artists. Michelle also provides a guided exercise to help you either get started or to refine your goals.

TO WATCH:
Mind Mapping Your Goals - In a recorded zoom from the first residency, Heather Tinkham leads a mind map exercise that has been a very helpful process both for goal setting and thinking through life choices. LINK (the password is myenso)

TO ACCOMPLISH:
1. Using the materials above and any of the resources below, write out your goals and be prepared to talk about them in the Zoom Circle on Friday.
2. Visit Slack at least once. Go to the BREAK ROOM channel and strike up a conversation or respond to one in progress. Get to know your circle community members.
3. After Friday’s zoom, Post your Goals in Slack on the PROGRESS REPORTS AND GOALS channel.

TO DEEPEN: (This section of the lesson guide will provide optional readings and exercises to deepen your studio practice.

Starting Your Residency With A Good Book
This annotated downloadable pdf lists several good books to take with you during your residency. Some have been suggested by prior residents, but most come from Lyn’s and Michelle’s well-worn and much-loved bookshelf.

Note: You may want to download these suggested exercises to keep for gaining insights into your work, discovering helpful practices for developing studio practices that support your work.

1.28.22 4:00 CDT - SPECIAL FRIDAY ZOOM: (There will be a few additional Circle meetings by zoom, other than our usual Monday Zoom. They are on the class schedule.)

In the spirit of collaboration, Lyn and Michelle will share their own goals and how they arrived at their own focus for these three months. You will also share your goals with the Circle. In preparing for this Zoom, outline some of the things you need to research or learn to make your goals a reality. Are their things you need to purchase or repurpose? What steps might you need to take and what detours are you planning to avoid?

OPTIONAL RESOURCES:
  • Mind-mapping handout from Heather (A handy downloadable guide to Heather’s Mind Mapping exercise)
  • DeWitt Jones: Celebrating What's Right With The World  (An inspiring Ted Talk about “getting your best shot” from DeWitt Jones National Geographic photographer.)
