WEEK NINE: Working with Goals and Deadlines – Dress Rehearsal Week
PREVIEW:
Almost everyone has had a dream in which they are suddenly expected to give a lecture or make a presentation and they have no idea where they are or what they are doing there. Everyone is looking at them expectantly. Yikes! This week we will focus on how to get over the anxiety of presenting our art to the public by anticipating and preparing for a potential exhibition catalog entry.
4:00 CST
MONDAY ZOOM: In preparation for Monday’s zoom, think about times when you’ve presented your work at an exhibition or posted it online. How did you feel when you put it “out there”? How did you choose the work your presented? How did you use the ideas of self-critique that we discussed last week in choosing your work? Reflect on the question of whether posting your work online is easier than posting physical work in a public place.
Be prepared to share your thoughts with the Circle. You might also want to “audition” the piece for your “dress rehearsal” that you are thinking about posting to Slack in the Dress Rehearsal Channel on Slack.
To Read:
Go back over the two previous Enso Circle Catalogs.
May 2021: https://www.theensocircle.com/catalog-may-2021.html
September 2021: https://www.theensocircle.com/catalog-september-2021.html
Choose two of the artists in each catalog and study their choices of artwork and their description of that work and their statements about themselves. What do you like? Do the statements match the work?
Look at this recent catalog of student work from the Rockport, Texas Center for the Arts. Read the statements and see how they reflect the art.
TO ACCOMPLISH:
Post at least one piece done during this residency that you think is catalog-ready to the Slack Dress Rehearsal Channel along with a 100 word description of the piece and what it signifies.
This is all just between us – no stress, just fun. You are encouraged to comment on each other’s work as helpful colleagues.
NOTE: You do not have to post this same piece in the final exhibition catalog, although you may. This is just a dress rehearsal exercise.

Guest Artist - Pre-Recorded Lecture with Susie Monday
This “keeper” presentation recorded on Zoom for the Fiber Artists of San Antonio will give you a lexicon of ideas to help you talk about your art in authentic ways.
Susie Monday is an artist and teacher who works from her studio in Pipe Creek, about an hour from downtown San Antonio. Her large textile collage stitched art evokes the culture, stories and landscapes of the Texas Borderlands — and the inner creative life of the artist.
