WHY THE ENSO ?

We have been in the process of planning this creative community for years. We had tried out all kinds of names for our group - names like The Collective Colony, B&B Studios, The Nesting Place - names that seemed to be imposed on the concept rather than coming from within the concept.

Then we discovered the metaphor of the Enso Circle. The ensō is a manifestation of the artist in the moment of creating and the acceptance of one’s innermost self. It symbolizes strength, elegance, and focus. It also celebrates individuality because the very imperfections and contours that otherwise prevent a perfect circle from being created are exactly what makes the ensō beautiful. The Enso Circle symbolizes many things: the beauty in imperfection, the art of letting go of expectations, the circle of life, and connection.

It was the (imperfectly) perfect name for our creative community – The Enso Circle!

The ensō  is traditionally drawn using only one brushstroke as a meditative practice in letting go of the mind and allowing the body to create. A single brushstroke flows directly from brain to heart to hand without interruption.

Lyn tried this single ensō brushstroke for the video (left). It is a centering experience, a first step toward sharing something that we hope will resonate with you in the community of The Enso Circle.
